The five components of a sound remote medical monitoring system include: the process of accurate data collection in digital format, electronic medical records for data integration and remote transmission, a set of protocols for remote data analysis, various communication tools that allow effective dialogue between patients and medical service providers, a system that automatically marks and provides feedback on abnormal data. 1) The transmission hardware may include mobile phones, hand-held personal digital aids or diaries, portable, laptop computers or desktop computers.
2) Data can be transmitted in the following ways: voice message via telephone, short message (SMS) via wireless network to Web interface, e-mail message via Internet, real-time streaming audio or video via Internet. Physiological data collected from patients, such as blood glucose level, continuous blood glucose level and blood pressure;

The information pattern can be analyzed by decision support software. In this way, intermediate medical practitioners or doctors can contact patients on a regular basis when it is safe to do so, or automatically contact patients when a high-risk event occurs. The image of retinal examination or foot wound can be transmitted from the general practitioner's office to the expert consultant at the remote center. In some cases, remotely transmitted foot images can even be collected by the patient at home. These images can be evaluated in real time by the measuring doctor or quickly by an expert consultant at a remote central location.
